LAne invited me to come meet MARK (ALSTON) at his studio, when he revealed this tastey jewel. i feel fortunate for seeing this at such an early stage, and im definitely the first west coast dude blogging about this act, but i will definitely not be the last. trust, you will see. it’s probably better that MARK didn’t say anything about the studded jacket hes wearing in their promo shots…cuz i would have tried to kill him for it…and he’s a great guy. bummer.

but then everything changed:
we got a sliced, feeling lower than low, but at least we were no longer hungry. LAne’s awesome friend MARK ALSTON has a recording studio up the block though. so we meet up with him, to find that he is producing and composing with an awesome band: FIRST MOVEMENT. (the singer is a really really raging futuristic vocalist with r&B sensibilities. then after listening to a few, to my utter amazement MARK drops a bomb and asks me to throw down a couple verses for some songs, and my heart is currently beating up into my throat. i say yes, obviously! so here on my last night in new york, i have new tracks to work on, and tomorrow afternoon we are going to go lay them down. suddenly things turn around 180 degrees.

so what am i doing now?
its halloween night, and im waiting to go somewhere and bury in work for tomorrow, at an awesome coffee lounge in Brooklyn called LINGER. the waitresses are sweet and beautiful. the coffee is hot, and magical. theres awesome freestyle electro playing in the lounge, and though im stinky, and soar, life is good. for real. missing my friends on HALLOWEEN, but i’ll be back soon and we will do what we always do. what’s that you ask? the damn thing.

ON to VISO: it’s a good drink. not just that, but it has the caffein potency of 3 cups of coffee. and us portlanders like our stimulants. so, why does that matter? its a completely unexploited brand, and marketing is very very inactive. as a musician trying to gain exposure, this is the perfect brand. portland musicians working a day job, need to stay up and create their art. so the brand is not only there as a resource economically, but it is a natural marriage for an artist with late hours. i see this as a niche. why cant a portland company put on a garage fest? you know? plus SCIONs are whack. VISO is legit. i can see it. annual VISO music festivals. all PDX, all grassroots exposure. i want to see the people take our marketing into our own hands, and stand behind local brands that will actually do something for us. you know?

i've yet to see a car this hot

im obsessed with the subway. you take Portland’s MAX line, extract the bubbly state fair carousel feel, and add a real grit. you can feel the layers of history embedded in these subway cars. see, there’s no 3rd rail with the max, i mean; i ride my skateboard right over the tracks. the subway has an element of danger that is curiously sexy. sure it’s dirty, but its the type of dirt you like. And, when you climb the steps out of your stop, there’s a world of surprises around you, and you never know what will be there to meet you. from a posh older woman giving you the eye in manhattan, to a bohemian yuppie jamaican with a thick long beard and knee high galoshes breezing past you.

i spoke with a rapper from the vegas, via the midwest, who had virtually all the same stops as me. we just inhaled queens, looking into windows with common themes: pale blue television light, floral mattresses, one to two people going on about their nightly routines. the sparks from the 3rd rail as we hit corners were reflecting off of brownstones, and the wet black streets. across from us a woman and a man she knew were comparing pictures of new-born babies, “No, Jason, your baby is ugly. I’m sorry, but you should have had a baby with ME! Look at him Jason, what’s wrong with your son?” with smiles the whole time. that wouldn’t fly on the west coast, but there’s something to be said about people appreciating the real, and having no time for the fake. im obsessed with the subway. obsessed.
